An Argument For The Mental And Physical Health Benefits Of Turkey Hunting

Physical activity in the outdoors, such as turkey hunting, improves both mental and physical health.

Mental health has been a hot topic for decades. Influencers, vloggers, doctors, twitter “experts”, they all come up with fancy hashtags and shout to the high heavens “get medicated” or “work out more” or “go to therapy” in order to alleviate stress and depression. And while these may be viable suggestions, I’m of a different mind.

Go turkey hunting. Continue reading “An Argument For The Mental And Physical Health Benefits Of Turkey Hunting”

Gobbler or a Hen? How to Tell the Difference in the Field.

Turkey season is fast approaching, my favorite game to hunt will always be Whitetail Deer; but Turkey and Pheasant battle it out for second place.

When you’re out there, sitting in a blind or calling against a tree and a flock of turkeys come in, how do you know which one to take?

A Hail Mary Kansas Turkey Hunt – Grand Osage

I’m sharing my favorite turkey hunt, a Hail Mary hunt that ended with a fantastic kill.

Since I didn’t get a turkey this year I thought I’d share the story of my all time favorite turkey hunt. I originally posted a shortened version on the Kansas Travel Blog “My Kansas Turkey Hunt: The Belly Crawl and The Train“.

Episode 126 – Kansas – A Hail Mary Turkey Hunt

It was a media event hosted by the Association of Great Lakes Outdoor Writers in Parson, Kansas.

We’d drawn a permit to hunt the Grand Osage Wildlife Area,  which used to be part of the Kansas Army Ammunition Plant. It was interesting to see the abandoned train cars and defunct munition factories. Continue reading “A Hail Mary Kansas Turkey Hunt – Grand Osage”

Wisconsin Turkey Zone 1 – Thursday

For whatever reason the week leading up to my first turkey period was incredibly stressful.  Trying to get everything done that needed to get done so we could leave from work on Thursday without wondering what I forgot to do seemed like an impossibility.  The woods were calling me and I felt so unorganized and anxious.

Finally at about 11:30 pm on Wednesday I was able to get to sleep.  One thing after another seemed to go wrong. And the cherry on top?  My husband noticed while we were loading up that my truck was leaking radiator fluid. Continue reading “Wisconsin Turkey Zone 1 – Thursday”

Zone 2 Turkey Hunt

For almost a year now I’ve been working with the Fond du Lac Area Convention & Visitors Bureau to highlight what a great area that is.  It’s close to home, they have wonderful trout streams and great hunting availability.

When Carrie Stollenwerk offered to connect me with Loren Voss aka The Turkey Commander; I jumped at the chance!

Loren is quite the firecracker, we communicated for two weeks and settled on Saturday May 12 to see if we couldn’t bag me another turkey.
