The HuntFishTravel Podcast Episode #250 – Mini Episode – Fishing Tales from Devil’s Lake: A Guide’s Journey with Jared Pokrzywinski

In this episode of the HuntFishTravel Podcast, I’m on location at Devil’s Lake, North Dakota, for a media trip hosted this past spring by the Devil’s Lake Tourism Bureau in conjunction with the Association of Great Lakes Outdoor Writers. While there, I had the chance to sit down with Jared Pokrzywinski, an experienced fishing guide and Pro Staff Team member, to talk all things Devil’s Lake. Devils Lake, North Dakota – The Shore Fishing Capital of the Upper Midwest?

Rumor has it Devils Lake, North Dakota offers the best shore fishing in the Upper Midwest, and the evidence is hard to ignore. From miles of accessible shoreline to viral videos of anglers out-fishing boats from the bank, Devils Lake is a must-visit destination for bank anglers looking for serious action.

If you ask a serious angler where to find the best shore fishing in the Upper Midwest, you’re bound to hear about Devils Lake, North Dakota. It’s not just hype. This massive natural lake has a reputation for producing incredible fishing action right from the bank. Whether you’re targeting walleye, pike, perch, or white bass, the shoreline around Devils Lake offers miles of accessible, productive water.

What sets this lake apart is the unique combination of size, structure, and shoreline access. With water levels that have risen dramatically over the past few decades, old roadbeds, flooded timber, and submerged structures now sit right at the edge of the water. That means prime fish habitat is often within easy casting distance. No boat required.

I recently watched an episode of Jason Mitchell Outdoors where he fished from shore on Devils Lake and completely out fished a crew working from boats. It’s a great visual example of what locals and visiting anglers have been saying for years. Devils Lake can be just as productive from the bank as it is from a boat. Sometimes even more so.

Popular spots for bank fishing include Six Mile Bay, Channel A, and various bridges and causeways around Minnewaukan and the surrounding area. The riprap along Highway 19 is also well known for holding walleye and pike, especially in spring and fall when fish move in shallow to feed. Many of these spots are vehicle accessible and have ample room to spread out, which makes them ideal for solo anglers or families looking for a laid back fishing trip.

Local bait shops and guides are also happy to point you toward hot spots and the right gear. Slip bobbers, jigs with plastics or live bait, and crankbaits are all reliable producers depending on the season.

During a media event in May conditions were pretty terrible, but a few of our crew made the best of it, Ray Ruiz Jr and Paul Johnson and were out there braving the elements!

The combination of fishable shoreline, big fish potential, and a welcoming outdoors culture makes it a standout destination.

Mother Nature took pity on us and the next day we were able to make it out, I’ve got a ton of interviews and a few more blog posts coming up so subscribe to the blog here and be sure to subscribe to the YouTube channel!

So if you’re looking for your next great road trip, consider giving Devils Lake a shot. Pack your favorite rod, bring some boots, and prepare to be impressed. Even if you never leave dry land.
